A. Boyd Claytor III Education and Research Facility

The A. Boyd Claytor III Education and Research Facility at the University of Lynchburg spans 7,700 square feet and is located near wetlands and the Big Otter River. Its design integrates with the natural surroundings and provides access to a variety of habitats. The facility includes an integrated classroom/laboratory, a Discovery room for K-12 classes, a research lab with storage, the Ramsey-Freer Herbarium for botanical studies, and a multi-purpose seminar room for about 40 people, which features a large observation deck.

Otter Space

Otter Space is the Claytor Nature Center’s outdoor play area designed for elementary-aged children to explore, imagine, and connect with nature through hands-on experiences. Built from natural materials, the space encourages creative play and environmental curiosity.

Families are welcome when it’s not reserved for school groups or events, and renovations — supported by the Peaks of Otter chapter of Friends of the Blue Ridge — are underway to enhance this unique outdoor learning space.
